SPLIT

Split has a rich history showing off in all ancient and middle aged monuments in the town. Especially the town center formed by the ancient summerpalace of the Roman Emperor Diocletianus and the cathedral, the big mainsqaire and its open air theatre is bringing you back in time.
The history of Split is showing also in the many musea like the city museum, the maritime museum and the beautiful museum of sculptor Mestrovic.
The summerpalace of Diocletianus was build in 305 AC and still has several original spaces from that time. The main entrance is the bronze gate at the splendid boulevard of Split.

The main square (Narodni Trg) is the center of the old city. At the eastern side is a Roman belltower. The square was build in the 14th century with on the northside the old city hall, now the ethnografic museum.

The maritime museum can be found in the Gripe fortress and has expositions about the big maritime influence on the Adriatic Sea in the past.

The archeologic museum shows a extensive collection of items from the Heric, the Greek and the Roman time and gives a very good view on the history of Croatia.

For the fans of sculptures there is the Galery Mestrovic. A museum in a monumental building with the most important work of the well known Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic from the 20th century, also known as the Croatian Rodin. Besides the sculptures in bronze, marble and wood you will find the sketches, drawings, furniture and plaster casts.

In short, more than worth the visit.

Just like many other cities in Split it is possible to go on a bus tour through the city which will give you a very good impression of everything this town has to offer. Included is even a visit to the mount Marjan with a fantastic view over the town and the many islands on the coast.
